Toll Plaza: Goodbye to Fastags.. New technology at toll plazas.. Center’s key decision!
Government of India is planning to start satellite based electronic toll collection in the country. It will be implemented for commercial vehicles first. After this, the Center is trying to implement this technology in private cars, jeeps and vans in a phased manner. Plans are underway to install this Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) at all toll collection points in the next two years. With this, FASTag services will end.
Due to new technology, vehicular congestion at the toll plaza will be relieved. Under this technology, the user has to pay the toll according to the distance he has to travel. GNSS based toll system will be barrier free electronic toll collection. In which the vehicle movement is tracked to determine the number of kilometers traveled by the vehicle.
The National Highways Authority of India, working under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, has invited global companies to implement a GNSS-based electronic toll collection system in India. Each toll plaza has two or more GNSS lanes with advance readers to detect GNSS vehicles. Non-GNSS vehicles entering the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) lane will be charged extra. GNSS based tolling system will be implemented on 2,000 km of national highways in the first three months. After this, they aim to increase it to 10,000 km in the next nine months, 25,000 km toll highways and 50,000 km in 15 months. Presently there is FASTAG system in India. It uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for electronic toll collection. It was introduced in 2015 in the form of Fastag.
